What is Phonics?
Phonics is the letter-sound correspondence. This is the way children in British schools are taught to read and write when they first start school.
Vocabulary
There is lots of technical vocabulary involved in Phonics. Graphemes, phonemes and digraphs are all terms we use regularly in the classroom. Although these terms are unfamiliar to lots of adults, children pick them up very quickly!
Letters and Sounds
Letters and Sounds is the government programme for phonics teaching in schools (see the link below). It is split into different phases, each phase builds on the last.
On Line Phonics Games
Learning phonics can be really fun! There are lots of interactive games available on line (see Links). Other games you can play include 'hangman' and 'phonics bingo'.
Magnetic letters for the fridge, chalks and finding letters in a sand pit are other fun ways for younger children to learn.
Becky has taught all phases of Letters and Sounds. She has also experience of using other phonics programmes. Becky will assess your child to establish what phase of Letters and Sounds they are at. She will then build on their existing phonic knowledge. Phonics is best taught in regular, short sessions. If you require phonics tuition for your child, please email stepintotuition@gmail.com
